Who is responsible for an individuals career development? Is it the organisation they work for, or does the responsibility rest on the individual’s shoulders? In the past the question was easy to answer – Organisations were deemed to be responsible for the development and progress of their employees. In return, employees stayed with the company for many many years and were very loyal. However, while some companies provided excellent career development, others didn’t really do the job well. Then with the advent of the internet and the knowledge economy, everything changed. With the different modes of working available and the rise of continuous learning, employees were more able to shift jobs and careers. Adding to this was the performance improvement and cost cutting drives that many companies embarked upon, which put less focus on employee well-being. So people stayed with companies for a much shorter time frame and companies fired people easily.

With this new equation, the responsiblity for career development has shifted towards the employee/ individual, with organisations being much less responsible.
